Forget privacy, web sites are selling our data

Stanford University released a study stating that a number of popular Web sites reveal personal information of its users, such as user names and emails.

More than half of 185 popular web sites that had a huge number of visits have shared user name or identification of their users to other websites.

These data were mostly shared with Facebook, Google, comScore and Quantcast. On several occasions in the study stated that the sharing of personal information violates the privacy policy, and yet one example in the study is the web site of NBC, which once you visit, your email address sent to seven companies.

The study was presented at a conference on privacy, where the President of the U.S. Federal Agency for Consumer Protection, John Libovic said that this study will help the agency to protect the online privacy of consumers. According to Mr.. Libovic requires a system that will allow consumers to choose whether their online presence will be followed or not. With this option the companies will be limited in how much information can be collected from consumers. Consumers should be able to choose whether their data can be collected and how that data would be used. He praised Microsoft, Mozilla, and Apple, in their browsers have this option turned on, and hopes that Google will soon do the same.
